01 Make a muslin
I always advise making a muslin (also known as a toile or a mock-up) first, especially when using a new pattern. Sew the muslin from a similar but inexpensive fabric, to check both the size and fit.
02 Choosing the Right Size
No size fits all, so all patterns usually always need to be adjusted to fit our body. Read more about choosing the right size and altering the patterns for best fit here.
03 Precision, precision
Sewing requires a lot of precision, whether it be transferring patterns or cutting out fabric. So, try to be as precise as you can without overstressing yourself. I also encourage you to trace the patterns instead of cutting them, as this gives you the opportunity to sew different sizes later.
04 Preshrink fabrics if needed
Many fabrics shrink when they are washed for the first time, so remember to preshrink (and iron!) the fabric if needed. This will prevent the finished garment from getting distorted when washing it for the first time.
05 Pressing along the way
Pressing along the way makes your garments look right away more professional, as well as smooths out the sewing journey. There are also helpful tools, like Tailor's ham, which make pressing certain garment areas easier. Tailor's ham is a firm cushion that is used as a curved mold when pressing curved areas of garments, such as princess seams or sleeves. It allows a garment to better fit the curves of the body. Also known as dressmaker’s ham.
06 Good sewing is a balance of preparation, sewing, and unsewing
Good sewing is a balance of preparation, sewing, and unsewing. So, pay attention to the preparation and make sure you have everything you need, including sharp scissors and needles.
07 But most importantly... Have fun!
It’s important to look at sewing as a fun adventure, and as something that you get better and better at with time. Remember that sewing is not a race, so take your time. Sewing requires a lot of precision, so try not to sew when tired or out of focus. Instead, take a small break—your sewing project will be there waiting for you once you're rested and full of new energy!
Happy sewing! xoxo Stella
